Ben Horowitz says AI fast takeoff is unlikely as key conditions go unmet

Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, recently stated on a podcast that a rapid AI takeoff is unlikely. He built his argument on a framework from Ali Ghodsi, CEO of Databricks, which identifies four conditions necessary for AI to reach runaway self-improvement. According to Horowitz, none of these four conditions are currently met: resource requirements are increasing, training times are lengthening, and accuracy improvements are not sufficiently iterative and simultaneous. He cited GPU shortages, energy limitations, and the growing complexity of training processes as the main physical constraints on AI development. Horowitz believes the next phase of AI will be shaped by data centers, power contracts, and chip allocations, rather than by a self-improving machine.
