China has warned the United States of potential retaliation if the Trump administration expands secondary sanctions targeting Chinese companies involved in Iran’s petroleum trade. For the first time, Beijing invoked its ‘blocking rule,’ allowing Chinese companies to disregard foreign sanctions it deems illegitimate. China purchases roughly 80% of Iran’s crude oil shipments.
