Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has filed civil penalty proceedings against Telegram in the Federal Court, seeking up to A$54.6 million ($38 million), after a year-long investigation into extremist content. The regulator alleges Telegram failed to detect pro-terror material including the 2019 Christchurch mosque shooting and the 2022 Buffalo supermarket attack video, which remained online for nearly three months. Commissioner Julie Inman Grant stated the platform maintained a permissive environment where extremist content was easy to find and could be used to plan attacks. The proceedings came a day after Russia’s FSB charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with aiding terrorism. Telegram rejects the allegations and will contest them in court.
