Australia’s data center electricity consumption is expected to rise from 5 TWh currently to 34 TWh by 2035-36, a sevenfold increase that would raise their share of the national grid from 3% to 13%. The number of data centers under development has doubled to 225, prompting AEMO to create a distinct load category for this sector. Total electricity demand across the NEM is forecast to grow over 40%, climbing from roughly 176-178 TWh in 2025-26 to around 250 TWh by 2035-36. These projections arrive approximately 15 years ahead of earlier estimates that had placed this demand level at mid-century.
