At least four people were killed and dozens seriously injured in a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada’s armed forces on home soil. The fire broke out around 4 p.m. in a training area with winds gusting up to 96 kilometers per hour, and firefighters battled the blaze through the night in extreme conditions. The victims came from military bases across the country. Patients are being treated in Edmonton, Wainwright, Calgary and Red Deer, while flags on federal buildings have been lowered to half-staff to honor the victims.
