As Trump administration readies economic warfare measures against Iran, top security official vows retaliation ‘in a seismic manner’

The new head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, warned Sunday that Tehran would view any country’s support for new U.S. economic measures against the Islamic Republic as an « act of war, » adding that Iran would retaliate « in a seismic manner. » U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce new measures Monday after the United States vowed to impose an « unprecedented » level of economic warfare and isolation on Iran, which has lived under sanctions for decades. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended Sunday the June memorandum of understanding as the best way forward, saying the country cannot attract investment nearly six months after the war began. The U.S. military blockade of Iranian ports has redirected 70 commercial ships and disabled three as of Sunday, according to American forces.
