Argentina’s central bank says no to crypto in banks this year

Argentina’s central bank (BCRA) confirmed on October 7, 2026, that no progress on crypto integration into the banking system would be made this year, keeping in place the ban imposed in May 2022 on commercial banks offering digital asset services. Superintendent Juan Curutchet justified the pause by the country’s economic fragility, saying the financial system cannot absorb a new asset class at this time. Argentina recorded over $88.5 billion in digital asset transaction volume for the year ending June 30, 2026, ranking it second in Latin America. A potential reconsideration of the ban would depend on improved economic conditions and possibly a second term for President Javier Milei. Despite the restrictions, banking groups such as Grupo Bind and Grupo Petersen are pursuing independent stablecoin projects.
