Apple launched preorders on Friday for its iPhone Duo, its most expensive iPhone ever, starting at $1,999 and reaching over $3,000 for the 2TB storage tier. Apple described the initial demand as “nothing short of extraordinary,” with launch-day pickup inventory selling out and online delivery estimates slipping into late January. According to IDC, foldables represent just over 2% of global smartphone units this year but nearly 7% of industry revenue, highlighting the volume-versus-value gap central to Apple’s strategy. Analysts at JPMorgan and D.A. Davidson expect the Duo to have a disproportionate impact on iPhone revenue due to its higher average selling price, even as overall shipments remain roughly flat. IDC forecasts Apple will ship approximately 7 million units this year, or about 3% of its total shipments, potentially capturing 40% of the global foldable market.
