Apple briefly hit a market capitalization of $5 trillion for the first time on Tuesday, one day after passing Nvidia to become the most valuable publicly traded company. The iPhone maker’s shares have jumped 25% this year, outpacing its megacap peers, reaching a high of $342.89 before slipping slightly. Apple will report quarterly results on Thursday in Tim Cook’s final earnings call as CEO before John Ternus takes over on September 1. The company announced Upgrade, a new program allowing U.S. customers to lease iPhones and other products instead of buying them outright. Nvidia, which was the first company to hit the $5 trillion mark in October, has gained only 6% this year.
