Apple has filed a legal challenge at the UK Investigatory Powers Tribunal against a Technical Capability Notice issued by the Home Office demanding backdoor access to encrypted iCloud backups under its Advanced Data Protection feature. The company maintains its firm position that it has never built and will never build a backdoor into its products and services. After disabling Advanced Data Protection for UK users in response to the initial January 2025 notice, Apple is now challenging the revised UK-specific notice. The outcome of this case could set a major global precedent for end-to-end encryption, with direct consequences for all encryption-dependent products and protocols, including crypto-assets and Bitcoin wallets.
