Apple has reached an agreement with the European Commission to overhaul its App Store fee structure in Europe. The widely criticized per-install Core Technology Fee will be replaced by a 5% Core Technology Commission applied to revenue from digital goods and services sold outside the App Store. The new commission takes effect October 1, 2026, representing Apple’s most substantive concession yet under the EU’s Digital Markets Act. The Initial Acquisition Fee and Store Services Fee are also being eliminated, benefiting notably smaller developers who were disproportionately burdened by the old structure. Publicly traded companies and venture-backed firms can now operate alternative app marketplaces on iOS in Europe.
