Anthropic wins lawsuit against Trump administration over national security designation

A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration’s blacklisting of AI company Anthropic was unlawful retaliation for the company’s ethical stance on military AI use. Judge Rita F. Lin of the US District Court in Northern California granted partial summary judgment on August 27, calling the designation « arbitrary and capricious » and a violation of First Amendment rights. The conflict originated from negotiations over a roughly $200 million contract where Anthropic insisted on ethical usage guidelines restricting certain military applications. On February 27, 2026, the administration issued a supply chain risk designation against Anthropic, barring federal agencies from doing business with the company. Anthropic filed suit on March 9, 2026, and secured a preliminary injunction 17 days later, effectively restoring its ability to compete for federal contracts potentially worth billions of dollars.
