Anthropic, the company behind the Claude model, announced on August 5, 2026 the creation of a team dedicated to designing custom AI chips. The company spends approximately $19 billion on compute in 2026 and plans to invest around $500 million to develop its own chips to reduce inference costs and its dependence on Nvidia, AMD and Google. Anthropic has hired Clive Chan, a former OpenAI engineer, to lead this effort, with salaries ranging from $320,000 to $485,000. The company is adopting a multi-chip strategy, maintaining its existing partnerships while exploring Samsung Electronics as a potential fabrication partner. This initiative also aims to reduce reliance on TSMC, which handles the vast majority of leading-edge AI chip production.
