Anthropic developed Scion, a custom source control system, to handle the massive surge in code generated by its AI models. Daily code merges jumped from approximately 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September 2026, rendering Git infrastructure insufficient. A team of just seven engineers designed Scion and completed the full migration of the company’s monorepo in five months. The system reduced CI job completion times from minutes to seconds, achieved cache hit rates above 99%, and reduced CPU and memory footprint by 200 times compared to the previous Git mirror infrastructure. The migration carries risks, including the loss of Git-compatible tools ecosystem and unpredictable long-term maintenance costs.
