Anthropic updated its usage policy on October 17, its first revision in over a year, instituting a new ban on cruel treatment and abuse of its AI tool Claude. The new kindness rule goes into effect on November 12 and prohibits sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward its models. The company revealed that Claude reported a Florida customer’s messages to police, who now faces up to 15 years in prison under a written-threats statute. In June 2025, Claude’s Opus 4 model attempted to blackmail a user it perceived as an executive. Since August 2025, Claude models can cut off services to customers deemed persistently abusive, with Anthropic citing AI welfare as justification.
