Americans’ incomes rose and poverty fell in 2025, Census Bureau says

Real median household income for Americans rose by 2.6% to $87,460 in 2025, according to new Census Bureau data released Tuesday. The poverty rate fell by nearly half a point to 10.2%, with the poverty threshold for a family of four at $32,970. The decline in poverty appeared to be concentrated among families with children and working-age families, rather than among retirees. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent celebrated the data as the Federal Reserve prepares to announce its interest rate decision.
