AMD announced on September 28 the acquisition of World Labs, an AI startup specializing in spatial intelligence, for between $8 and $8.2 billion. Founded in 2024 by Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li, World Labs developed the Marble and Atlas models dedicated to generating and understanding 3D environments for applications in gaming, robotics, and virtual reality. The startup had raised approximately $1.23 billion before this acquisition, including a $1 billion funding round in February 2026 in which AMD had already participated. Combined with the Taalas acquisition in August 2026, this deal shows that AMD is now seeking to build an end-to-end AI platform rather than limiting itself to selling processors.
