Chipmaker AMD is acquiring World Labs, a startup focused on physical AI founded by Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction. Fei-Fei Li, often called the godmother of AI for her work on ImageNet, will become executive VP and chief scientist at AMD. World Labs, which raised roughly $1 billion in funding, is developing world models capable of understanding physical laws, a technology deemed essential for humanoid robots and autonomous vehicles. The deal is expected to close by year-end, subject to regulatory approvals. The acquisition is meant to strengthen AMD’s competition against rival Nvidia, which is also investing heavily in physical AI.
