Alexandr Wang is now leading Meta’s AI dream team. Will Mark Zuckerberg’s big bet pay off?

Mark Zuckerberg appointed 28-year-old Alexandr Wang as Meta’s first-ever Chief AI Officer, as part of a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, Wang’s data-labeling startup. Wang now leads Meta Superintelligence Labs, a new organization bringing together former executives and researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Apple, with compensation packages reportedly reaching $200 million over four years for some. The stated goal is to achieve superintelligence, a still-theoretical concept, by leapfrogging OpenAI and all other competitors in the race toward artificial general intelligence. Meta plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in massive data centers, with one reportedly having a footprint nearly as big as Manhattan. This appointment also aims to address Meta’s struggles following the April 2025 release of Llama 4.
