Arvind Narayanan, a Princeton computer scientist and coauthor of AI Snake Oil, said at a Northwestern conference that AI chatbots will become trustworthy enough to be treated as truth oracles by the general public. According to a Pew Research Center survey, 10% of Americans already use chatbots to settle factual questions. Narayanan estimated this shift toward chatbot-based truth-seeking could happen within a decade. He also warned against the asymmetric power dynamic between AI companies and publishers, arguing that newsrooms must prepare for a world where chatbots become the default reference for answering factual questions.
