AI data centers face billions in costs as power volatility wrecks critical equipment

AI data centers are experiencing power surges exceeding their design capacity by up to 50%, destroying batteries, generators, and cooling systems far faster than expected. Core Scientific has signed a $3.5 billion agreement to provide AI hosting services. US data center power demand is forecast to nearly double from 80 gigawatts in 2025 to 150 gigawatts in 2028, roughly equivalent to Spain’s entire electricity consumption. Bitcoin miners are aggressively pivoting to AI hosting, with AI revenues projected to account for 70% of total revenue for some publicly listed miners by late 2026.
