AI agents could pry loose the sleepy deposits US banks depend on

Torsten Slok, Chief Economist at Apollo Global Management, warned in September 2026 that AI agents could automate the search for better rates and transfer savings from low-yield bank accounts to fintech platforms offering between 3.3% and 5%. Meta launched Muse on September 8, 2026, an AI agent capable of connecting to over 12,000 financial institutions via Plaid. According to Reuters Breakingviews, if banks had to raise rates on $3.8 trillion in savings to 4%, the industry could face $79 billion in additional annual interest expenses. Shares of major US banks, including JPMorgan and Wells Fargo, fell more than 3% in September 2026 in response to these concerns.
