Google has acquired Spirit Airlines’ digital archive for $10 million in bankruptcy court, including approximately 100 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, as the airline liquidates its assets. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA filed an objection in US Bankruptcy Court, arguing that the privacy protections in the deal inadequately cover sensitive employee data. The union pointed out that employee data is far more confidential than consumer data yet receives far less protection under the current agreement. Flight attendants at Spirit have also not been paid their accrued vacation and sick leave, making the sale of their data particularly contentious. Google has stated that all data will be de-identified by a third party before transmission and that the company has no interest in receiving personal identifying information.
