Andreessen Horowitz has raised a 1.1 billion dollar fund exclusively dedicated to AI hardware and physical infrastructure. This Machine Age Fund, closed on August 28, will target chips, memory, networking, storage, and robotics. Compute density in AI racks has increased 28 times between NVIDIA’s H100 architecture and its Rubin platform. AI-optimized data center racks now draw 100 to 250 kilowatts, compared to 5 to 10 kilowatts for standard facilities, with projections reaching 1 megawatt within three years. This fund marks a strategic shift for a16z, historically software-focused, with hardware now accounting for over 20 percent of its recent deal flow.
