A $1,000 MetaMask incident could turn Ethereum’s staking queue into a $5 billion traffic jam

A MetaMask incident triggered by roughly $923 in diverted block tips has prompted 16,965 validators holding 565,056 ETH to initiate precautionary exits. Lido, which manages a portion of these validators, anticipates a gradual return of its ETH to Ethereum’s staking protocol, with a complete cycle potentially extending to 45 days. With daily entry capacity capped at 57,600 ETH, the full cohort’s return would represent 34 additional days of capacity, creating a combined workload worth $5.04 billion. Some 43.7 million ETH, or 35.78% of supply, was staked at the time of the incident, and foregone rewards during the inactivity period could reach approximately $4.63 million for the entire cohort over 45 days.
