North Korea reportedly rewards top hackers with Pyongyang apartments after alleged Binance heist

According to Reuters, North Korea reportedly rewards its top cyber operatives with Pyongyang apartments of up to 132 square metres, hard currency bonuses that can reach 30% of stolen proceeds and elevated social status. The FBI and blockchain investigators attributed the theft of approximately $6.3 billion from Binance on October 29, 2026, to the state-sponsored TraderTraitor group. The funds reportedly moved in roughly 20 minutes across at least 10 blockchains, while the attack relied on social engineering, fake job interviews and the compromise of internal systems. Pyongyang denies the attribution, but the reported rewards suggest a long-running, well-funded recruitment program that reportedly targets middle-school students for specialised computer-engineering training. Binance has committed to covering customer losses and has frozen part of the stolen assets, although the full amount recovered has not been disclosed.
