A judge of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court has ordered the return of a laptop containing a Bitcoin wallet to the family of William Sandeson. The court found that prosecutors had not proven that the digital assets were proceeds of crime or connected to the 2015 killing of Taylor Samson. The forfeiture of C$5,000 in cash was nevertheless upheld, as the money was deemed to be proceeds of crime. Sandeson estimated the wallet’s value at approximately C$8,000, while some valuations cited in civil litigation exceeded C$200,000. The laptop and its contents were never introduced as evidence during Sandeson’s criminal trial.
