OpenAI has launched the Grid Protectors Program, which would allow its future AI compute campuses to temporarily reduce electricity consumption during emergencies and periods of high demand. A planned facility in Effingham County, Georgia, could shed up to 1,000 megawatts under a 25-year agreement covering roughly 3,200 megawatts with Georgia Power. The company must cover the full cost of the power-delivery infrastructure, and Georgia Power projects nearly $950 million in annual customer savings starting in 2029, although those estimates also include other large customers. OpenAI is also seeking to replace the term “data center” with “AI compute campus” to lessen public opposition, while binding demand-reduction commitments for other sites have yet to be negotiated.
