North Korea denies role in $6 billion Binance hack after FBI accusation

Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, rejected US claims linking North Korea to the theft of more than $6 billion from Binance, calling them “absurd rhetoric.” The FBI attributed the hack, which occurred around October 29, to the TraderTraitor operation and urged cryptocurrency service providers to block transactions involving the listed wallets and funds derived from them. TRM Labs estimated that approximately $6 billion left Binance wallets across ten blockchains, mainly within about 20 minutes, and attributed the attack to TraderTraitor with high confidence. According to the FBI, the perpetrators primarily converted the stolen assets into ether, while further laundering through decentralized finance and instant-swap services is still expected. TRM Labs’ investigation indicates that the signing of valid transfers across several networks may point to a compromise of Binance’s hot-wallet signing infrastructure.
