Michael Klippsten, founder of Swan, believes artificial intelligence poses a more immediate threat to Bitcoin than quantum computing. He estimates that quantum computers capable of undermining Bitcoin’s cryptography are at least a decade away, and possibly further away. The network could adopt quantum-resistant protections if the threat became credible, but Klippsten warns that rushing to implement them would add unnecessary complexity and undermine security. He also accuses some cryptocurrency startups and investors of using fears about quantum computing to attract funding rather than addressing an imminent security risk.
