HSBC has announced plans to establish a research institute in Hong Kong that will open in early 2027 with at least 35 specialists. Its main priorities will be artificial intelligence, post-quantum cryptography and blockchain technology. The institute will form part of HSBC’s Hong Kong team of 150 AI specialists, which the bank plans to expand to 300 within two to three years, compared with more than 100 specialists planned for its Singapore centre. The expansion addresses the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s concerns and positions Hong Kong as HSBC’s main decision-making centre for artificial intelligence across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. The bank has nevertheless clarified that blockchain is a research priority rather than the launch of a digital asset or a specific network.
