Bhutan partners with 3iQ to manage sovereign Bitcoin holdings

Canadian digital asset manager 3iQ Corp. has partnered with Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), the Himalayan kingdom’s planned financial hub, to manage part of GMC’s sovereign Bitcoin treasury. The agreement, announced on July 30, 2026, aims to generate returns through low-risk, market-neutral strategies rather than simply keeping the BTC in cold storage. 3iQ also plans to establish a physical presence in Gelephu, invest in local talent, and transfer knowledge to Bhutanese staff. In December 2025, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck allocated up to 10,000 BTC from the national holdings to support GMC’s development, while the country’s sovereign holdings stood at about 5,600 BTC in mid-2026. 3iQ is a majority-owned subsidiary of Japan’s Coincheck Group, and the partnership is described as the first documented case of a sovereign Bitcoin treasury being managed by an external party.
