On October 31, 2026, an unexpected Ethereum reorganization led THORChain to issue two refunds for a 10 ETH deposit. The duplicate refund triggered the protocol’s emergency brake, halting trading and swaps across 12 of the 13 supported chains, although outbound signing remained active on most of them. Chainalysis said the pause also slowed the laundering of funds stolen from Binance, which it linked to groups associated with North Korea. THORChain did not deliberately target the stolen funds; the delay was a side effect of its automatic response to the anomaly. The halt can last up to 720 blocks, or about 1.5 hours, and node operators can vote to extend it.
