An amendment to the 2027 budget introduces a tax of 0.055 euros per gigabyte sent to French subscribers by content providers, with estimated annual revenue of 10 billion euros. Approved by the National Assembly by 11 votes to 10 despite the government’s opposition, the measure still has to be reviewed by the Senate. Estimates put the tax at 11.55 euros for GTA 6, 0.77 euros for a two-hour Netflix film in 4K and about 160 euros for the average French resident’s annual consumption. Synchronizing a full Bitcoin node would cost 42.85 euros, but the network’s decentralized architecture makes it impossible to identify a taxable sender. Taxed companies could nevertheless raise their prices by 17.6% in the worst-case scenario to preserve their net revenue.
