A resident of Ponteareas, in Galicia, reported in January that he had paid by bank transfer for heating pellets ordered through a fake online shop, but never received the delivery. After nine months of investigation, the Guardia Civil identified seven people: six living in Spain and one in France. Victims’ money was first transferred to bank accounts controlled by the group and then converted into cryptoassets to make tracing more difficult. Investigators nevertheless followed the transfers on the blockchain, enabling them to track the alleged perpetrators. As of October 22, no total amount for the fraud and no additional details about the suspects had been disclosed.
