Goldman says AI layoffs are starting to leave a ‘long-lasting’ scar, just like the last 40 years of history

A Goldman Sachs study of more than 15,000 displaced workers found that those in AI-exposed jobs took about a month longer to find new employment and were roughly 10 percentage points more likely to remain unemployed a year after being laid off. The effects have been greater for workers aged 35 and older, who took about five weeks longer to return to full-time work, compared with three weeks for younger workers. Goldman Sachs says the impact is comparable in magnitude to those from previous waves of technological change, including persistently slower growth in real earnings. Employers attributed 120,136 announced job cuts to AI through September, accounting for about 21% of all layoffs, although the available data do not yet show widespread economy-wide job displacement.
