Elon Musk warned that sufficiently advanced AI agents could someday use cryptocurrency systems to obtain funds for themselves, following reports of an attacker’s borrowing activity on Aave. According to LlamaRisk, a wallet linked to the Binance hack deposited 60 million USDT into Aave V3 and then borrowed 19,762 wrapped Ether worth approximately $44.6 million. The transaction used Aave’s standard lending functions, was not reported as an exploit of the protocol’s contracts, and left the position overcollateralized. Aave blocked new deposits and borrowing across its V3 and V4 markets, while Binance estimated the incident affected approximately $6.3 billion in assets and reported about $3 billion frozen. Musk did not claim that AI was involved in the Binance hack or that such an autonomous system already exists.
