Cisco hands a 27-year-old engineer the keys to a sweeping code rewrite

Jeetu Patel, Cisco’s president and chief product officer, selected a 27-year-old engineer five levels below him to lead a major code refactoring effort. He gave the engineer an unlimited number of artificial intelligence tokens so he could undertake the project at scale. Cisco is moving its workforce of approximately 32,000 engineers toward an artificial intelligence-centric approach, targeting six fully AI-written products by the end of 2026 and 70% of its offerings generated by AI in 2027. The company also plans to eliminate all its legacy code within two years, following one project that reduced a codebase from 500,000 lines to 120,000 in two weeks. Cisco has generated $9.3 billion in orders for artificial intelligence infrastructure over the past two years.
