Google Cloud Previews Institutional Crypto Key-Security Service as Custody Risks Grow

Share

Google Cloud has documented a multi-party compute service for institutional digital-asset custody that remains in a pre-general-availability stage. The service distributes signing authority among independent participants and uses threshold signing with key shares isolated in separate hardware environments. It also supports transaction policy enforcement and enterprise governance, with secp256k1 signing listed for Bitcoin and Ethereum-style networks, while Ed25519 support for Solana is described as coming soon. The technology may reduce key theft, unauthorized use, temporary signing outages, and permanent key loss risks, but it does not make transfers reversible and still requires strong controls over approvals, credentials, recovery, and governance. Its real-world value will depend on general availability, integrations with regulated custodians, disclosed security evaluations, independent testing, and practical documentation of recovery and policy administration.
