Christine Lagarde Sets February 2027 Exit From ECB Presidency

Share

Christine Lagarde will step down as president of the European Central Bank on February 7, 2027, roughly eight months before her mandate is due to expire in October 2027. Her successor will be selected under Article 283 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, after consultation with the European Parliament and the ECB, followed by formal appointment by the European Council. During her presidency, the ECB advanced preparations for the digital euro and launched Pontes, a system for settling tokenized assets in central bank money. Lagarde has also remained skeptical of Bitcoin, stating in January 2025 that it would not enter the reserves of central banks. Her departure will put the ECB’s future stance on cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and the digital euro under scrutiny.
