Solana activated the Alpenglow consensus protocol on its mainnet on October 21, at the start of epoch 1064 at around 13:36 UTC. Alpenglow targets a finality of about 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly 12.8 seconds under the previous TowerBFT mechanism, and allows validators to exchange consensus votes directly. Solana Foundation documentation says the protocol is designed to tolerate 20% of stake being offline and 20% behaving adversarially. The target delay is neither a guarantee for every transaction nor an automatic speed improvement for every application; its real-world effect will depend on production measurements, validator diversity and network reliability during periods of high activity.
