US allows vetted private firms to counter North Korean crypto theft

The United States is allowing vetted private companies to help counter crypto theft attributed to North Korea. According to Chainalysis, North Korean actors stole an estimated $2 billion in digital assets in 2025, including about $1.5 billion in the Bybit breach. The shift follows enforcement actions by the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Treasury, notably Operation Lonestar Roundup, which produced more than 70 indictments and arrests. Greater cooperation with the private sector through the Crypto-ISAC is expected to strengthen transaction screening, remote-worker vetting and oversight of stablecoins, which have been central to laundering schemes linked to APT38.
