Josh Swihart, founder of Zcash Open Development Lab and former head of Electric Coin Company, halted discussions on Shielded Labs’ Crosslink project, stating that he did not believe it would benefit Zcash. Crosslink would preserve traditional mining while adding a staking layer intended to secure transactions and generate interest, with amounts fixed in powers of ten to preserve anonymity within the Orchard pool. Swihart argues that the additional layer would overload the protocol and introduce new critical vulnerabilities, and maintains that Zcash should remain based on classic Nakamoto consensus. Although Crosslink has attracted backing from Vitalik Buterin and the Winklevoss twins, security concerns have divided the Zcash community and the project currently lacks the broad consensus needed to update its code.
