Jensen Huang says China can scale its AI research workforce better than any other country, with nearly half of the world’s AI researchers of Chinese origin. A September 2026 Carnegie Endowment study supports his view: 57% of the elite researchers tracked earned their undergraduate degrees at Chinese institutions, up from 46% in 2022. China has also become the main place these researchers work, employing 41% of them compared with 34% in the United States, as tighter US visa policies for STEM students have increased the appeal of Chinese universities. Huang notes that US export controls helped reduce Nvidia’s share of China’s AI GPU market from roughly 95% to zero, creating an opening for Huawei. He urges the United States to keep attracting global talent and to pursue dialogue with China on AI safety risks.
