Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, says the recursive improvement of artificial intelligence systems remains at an early stage. Current models cannot yet build other AI models in a fully autonomous manner. At Google DeepMind, AI loops and agents assist researchers, but these processes remain semi-automated. Google has not yet observed any notable acceleration in AI research and development across the various benchmarks, meaning a fully autonomous AI capable of improving itself without human intervention remains a distant goal. Announcements from Google, Anthropic and Meta, particularly concerning the Gemini 4 Argon model and new performance results, could shift market confidence by late October 2026.
