Ohio Wesleyan University president Peter B. McCoy argues that universities should stop requiring students to choose a major before they are ready to make a stable career decision. According to the data cited, about 30% of students switch majors within three years and nearly 80% do so over their lifetime, while 47% of enrolled students have seriously considered changing majors because of AI’s impact on jobs. He contends that colleges should expand arts and humanities programs and cultivate transferable skills such as reasoning, judgment, communication and contextual thinking instead of narrowing course offerings. Ohio Wesleyan lets students declare a major only in their second year, requires every student to complete an internship, research, study-abroad program, service project or business venture, and has committed $40 million to permanently increase faculty pay.
