A complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Washington by Benjamin Greenberg, a shareholder and former Circle employee, alleges that Donald Trump and World Liberty Financial profited from more than $2 billion in crypto-related transactions. The document focuses in part on Tahnoun ben Zayed Al Nahyan’s purchase of a 49% stake in World Liberty Financial, valued at $500 million shortly before Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. The complaint also claims that an Abu Dhabi-based investment fund bought $2 billion in USD1 stablecoins to inflate the value of the president’s crypto holdings. It argues that these transactions violated the Constitution’s foreign emoluments clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting money or gifts from foreign leaders without congressional consent. World Liberty Financial denies the allegations, while Circle says its former employee filed the case in his own name without the company’s approval.
