Monero hides the sender, recipient, and amount of every payment by default through ring signatures, stealth addresses, and ring confidential transactions. Early research found significant weaknesses, including the identification of the genuine output in 87% of the cases examined in 2017, but most were addressed through successive protocol changes. FCMP++ would replace ring signatures with full-chain membership proofs covering more than 150 million spendable outputs while preserving existing standard addresses and subaddresses. The upgrade is not yet live on the mainnet, and no official fork date has been announced; one developer’s non-binding draft plan suggests activation around March 2027. In the meantime, users can keep XMR in a wallet they control, use distinct subaddresses, avoid mirror-image payments, and reach the network through Tor or I2P.
