A study published on arXiv on October 6, 2026 presents a method that enables artificial intelligence agents to learn how to improve by reviewing their own revisions, including failed attempts. The technique, called Hindsight Meta-Experience Distillation, restores the agent to an earlier state and then runs the original and revised versions of its meta-skills under identical conditions. The outcomes are distilled into reusable experiences, even when a revision is rejected, to prevent future agents from repeating the same mistakes. Tested across six model-benchmark combinations, the method achieved the highest average performance in all six, outperforming established baselines, while the acquired meta-skills remained effective after the task-skill library was reset.
