Andreessen Horowitz is renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and expanding its focus to long-horizon technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, while maintaining its crypto investments and regulatory advocacy. Chris Dixon argues that blockchains have receded into the background of products used by Wall Street and financial-services companies, making the “crypto company” label less relevant. The firm, already a major crypto backer, retains investments in Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap, but its announcement does not disclose the fund’s new size; the latest known figure is the $2.2 billion announced in May, while the firm’s funds collectively raised more than $15 billion in January. Chris Dixon will lead a16z Frontier alongside Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet, with bets on autonomous machines, biology, medicine and new applications of artificial general intelligence.
